spread on active galaxies

This spread shows the invisible elements of a celestial body known as an Active Galaxy.

The challenge was to relate the images that come from x-ray telescopes to more familiar visual light images. Relationships to theories in other parts of the book had to be considered. And I wanted readers to have some appreciation of the scale and power that scientists realise are behind the tiny twinkles in the sky.

The Explained Series

The Explained series was packaged by Marshall Editions for Thames and Hudson in the U.K. and various publishers around the world. I designed the look for the original publication "Science Explained" and the cross referencing system that made the series special. The cross referencing allowed the reader to progress through the book from concept to concept rather than page by page.

Understanding these concepts prior to the designing was esential. Unlike many designers I am very interested by and at ease with scientific subject matter.

visuals of 3 spreads

Shown here are visuals I created for 3 spreads destined for a proposed Maths edition of the series. My ability to draw has often been extremely useful in the early stages of designing a project. Visualising the photographs and diagrams that will have to be created or aquired at a later stage allowing them to be corrected and aproved by authors and/or experts prior to incuring heavy expendature.

I really enjoyed the challenge of finding appealing images to convey the apparently dry concepts of Mathematics.
